The Art of public speaking

When I was growing up, one of my biggest fear was public speaking. I still remember when I was at university I was invited to make a presentation in front of hundred students. The weather was very cold & I did not have any jersey, that circumstance contributed to the shivering of my body. I went on front of students & introduced myself. After that moment, my tongue stuck in my mouth.

Suddenly, I felt a heavy energy of weakness running though my legs. I forget the entire speech! I waited 30 seconds silently looking like a fool while students were laughing. The best thing I did was walking out of lecture room. I went home & spend hours researching about public speaking. The following tips helped me & my favourite thing in the world right now is public speaking

How can you be effective & efficiency on your next public speaking?

1.       Think about your audience first
Every time l am invited to speak on public at an event I research about my audience first. Are they church members? Are they students? Are they investors? If I got the answer I will prepare the presentation according to my audience.

2.       Be prepared
Best way to be prepared is to know your entire speech or presentation. Practice, practice & practice again. Be ready to answer questions when your audience ask you

3.       Act confident
Fake it until you make it. Even if you are feeling the fear act like you are very confident. Minimize body gestures. Look at your audience straight into their eyes. Act like they are some people who owe you & you have the right to ask them when they are paying.

4.       Get your audience  involved
Find a way to get them involved so that presentation won’t get bored. Whether ask them a question or refer to someone in the audience.

5.       Be a good story teller
Being a good story teller is something which can be learned & practiced over & over again. Learn to tell some stories to your friends you feel comfortable with. Make people visualize what you are talking about.

6.       Be aware of common denominator
Find a common denominator which both you & your audience have. For example maybe you both come from similar background etc. Try to use it so that people can connect to what you are saying & they can relate to you.

7.       Be an entertainer
Don’t go in front of people & start reading something you wrote down. It’s completely boring! You   will discover that some of your audience will start to sleep. Be an entertainer, check when Kevin Hart or Chris Rock is on the stage. They are not boring but they are entertaining. Find out what makes them entertaining & use same principles.

8.       Be able to laugh at yourself
If you make a mistake be able to laugh at yourself not take everything seriously on stage.

9.       Think on your feet
On my introduction I told you a story about my first public speaking. One thing that made me forgot my entire speech : I was not thinking on my feet. So many thoughts were running in my mind. Clear your mind & be able to think on your feet.

10.   Listen
Don’t just talk, talk & talk. Be able to read your audience gestures. Try to make your speech short instead of long. If you don’t listen to your audience gestures ma1 ako.

11.   Have good time & keep on practicing
From the moment I began to follow the principles above I began to enjoy speaking on public. I now prefer to speak to thousands of people rather than small audience. The best way to conquer the fear of public speaking is to go & speak on public.

In conclusion don’t just read this information & ignore it. Prepare a 5 minute speech. Go in front of mirror & practice it. After that surprise your family or friends with the speech. The more you practice the more you become better.
